Community Based Abstinence Education
The essential theme of the Informed Waiting™ approach is that individuals should delay engaging in sexual activities until there is a committed relationship. We work in schools to help students understand the physical and emotional consequences of sexual activities. These consequences include, but are not limited to unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and emotional consequences such as anger, guilt, fear, and sadness.
We help youth begin to know, respect, and trust themselves. As they learn more about themselves, they will understand their goals, values, beliefs, and emotional drivers. This understanding will enable young people to have more patience and develop the self-confidence they need to make better relationship choices. Once they understand and appreciate their unique individuality, they will be more prepared to address the influences of their peers, popular culture, and their own emotions. As they start to respect and trust themselves, young people will begin to discern when they have actually developed a healthy relationship and will be able to make sound decisions on whether to engage in sexual activities. Ultimately, our program teaches youth how to think critically and navigate through the complicated maze of dating and eventual partner selection.
The Informed Waiting™ approach uses evidence-based or proven curricula that is selected based on the unique needs of young people and that are also effective in promoting relationship-building and critical thinking skills. These ‘unique’ needs are addressed by
- ensuring that our facilitators are aware of the current events/issues that matter to young people;
- presenting information in a culturally relevant manner; and
- demonstrating sensitivity with regards to the developmental issues of the young participants.
Family Comes First equips its facilitators to address the challenges facing young minds. Further, each of our facilitators has his/her own individual passion and commitment to provide young people a quality, transformative learning experience.
